(Tampa, Fla., 9/13/17)  The Council on American-Islamic Relations - Florida (CAIR - Florida), the state's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization, today announced that the University of Berkeley's Hass Institute released 'Legalizing Othering: The United States of Islamophobia'  report and database including an interview WIth CAIR-Florida's Executive Director Hassan Shibly. This report on the anti-Sharia movement in the United States addresses the legalized othering of Muslim communities across the nation through anti-Muslim legislation and bills between the years 2000 and 2016. Within the broader context of rising anti-Muslim sentiment, discrimination, securitization and acts of violence against Muslims and those perceived to be Muslim, this report sheds light on the anti-Sharia movement - part of the more organized, contemporary Islamophobia movement in the US since 2010.

In the Haas Institute Report's interview CAIR-Florida's Chief Executive Director denounced Lake County's Supervisor of Elections Alan Hays (former Florida State Senator) for being responsible for pushing forward these anti-Sharia bills in Florida.

"The biggest danger is that ALAC demonizes and marginalizes the American Muslim community. It reinforces the message of extremist groups that want to put Islam and America against each other, and makes Muslims feel marginalized, as well as promotes conflict. That's the first thing. We've noticed in the last year [2015] a 500% increase in anti-Muslim hate crimes, that's a direct connection with the rise of politicians targeting American Muslim communities, politicians like Senator Alan Hayes are actually demonizing entire Muslim communities and legitimizing the hate crimes, the attacks against mosques, and the violence against Muslims."
