Orlando Coalition Protesting

#SeparationofFamilies and #MuslimBan

(Orlando, FL, 6/29/18) – The Florida Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Florida), the State’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today announced a joint rally together with the TRUST Orlando Coalition. A press conference will be followed by interfaith community prayers in solidarity with several representatives of impacted communities and leaders denouncing Tuesday’s Supreme Court decision to allow Muslim Ban 3.0 to remain in effect. The rally will take place on Saturday, June 30, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at the steps of the Orlando City Hall (400 S Orange Ave., Orlando, FL 32801).

As discriminatory immigration policies and practices continue to emerge, local advocacy groups will come together to reject racism and xenophobia in all its forms.

WHAT: Families Belong Together/END Immigrant Detention Rally/#NoMuslimBanEver Orlando
WHEN: Saturday, June 30th, 2018 at 2:00 PM
WHERE: Steps of the Orlando City Hall

Many Florida communities have been affected by the anti-immigrant policies and practices of the Trump administration. We condemn their zero-tolerance policy which has separated over 2,000 families from each other. In addition, we demand that the inhumane detention and separation of families come to an end immediately. Separating children from their parents is a cruel and reprehensible way to treat families who come here seeking refuge.
The policy keeps the children in prisons along with their parents, swelling the number of prison beds and engaging various agencies, all at the taxpayer’s expense. Detaining families together is not a valid solution to family separation. Immigrant civilian detention centers should not exist at all because they have not committed any criminal acts. Families who are seeking asylum don’t belong in cages.

This policy is on the same continuum as the Muslim ban. In a 5 to 4 vote, the Supreme Court reversed a lower court’s injunction that had - until December of 2017 - prevented the Trump administration from using Muslim Ban 3.0 as a basis for denying visas to foreign nationals from eight affected countries. In its decision, the Supreme Court granted extreme deference to the Trump administration which gives them the green light to inject discrimination back into our immigration system.

Allowing the zero-tolerance policy and the Muslim ban to move forward reinforces anti-family policies. The administration is already using its authority to 1) take immigrants away from their loved ones with community ICE raids and 2) take children from parents at the border, both by drastically reducing the number of refugees allowed to enter the U.S., by appointing anti-immigrant Ronald Mortensen to the State Department’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration, and by now banning people entirely from entering the U.S. simply on the basis of their country of origin.

“Intentions and scare tactics are fundamental in Trump's anti-immigrant policies and practices. The immoral objective behind the #MuslimBan and the#SeparationOfFamilies is to openly discriminate against families based on their origin, ethnicity, and religious beliefs. Like history has shown through several social justice movements, change has never exclusively relied on the court system. Change has been achieved through the voice of the people, mass mobilizations, political engagements, and community organizing. TRUST us when we say - you will see us at the polls come November” said Rasha Mubarak, CAIR-Florida's Social Justice Advocate.
