(Tampa, FL, 2/24/2017) - The Council on American-Islamic Relations - Florida (CAIR-Florida), the state's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization, today reports that a fire took place in the Islamic Society of New Tampa / Daarus Salaam Mosque commonly referred as the New Tampa Mosque. At around 2:15am a Daarus Salaam Mosque board member was notified of a fire in the Mosque by the private the security-alarm company informing him that the Mosque sprinkler system has gone off more like because of a fire. They arrived to the property at around 2:30am; at around the same time as the first responders. We learned that the Hillsborough County Fire Rescue dispatch received a call at 2:09am and immediately moved to the area. This fire has the signs of an intentional criminal act, an arson; and the local authorities and federal agents from A.T.F. (Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms) are presently investigating it. ATF and other local law enforcement informed that it will be a few hours before an official statement from them is made. CAIR-Florida personnel and the Daarus Salaam Mosque leaders will be holding a press conference in front of the Mosque today at 10:00am.

"We congratulate the Hillsborough County first responders for their prompt response to this tragic situation. It is worrisome that our community have fallen victim of what appears to be another hate crime. This time another Florida mosque has been targeted in a crime that could have easily taken the life of any worshiper. Our prayers are with the New Tampa Mosque community; and we are grateful that nobody was physically hurt. CAIR-Florida urgently call all local, state and federal law enforcement agencies to be on top of the investigation of what appears to be a heinous act of terror against the Muslim community. Said Wilfredo Amr Ruiz, CAIR-Florida Communications Director.
