CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — The American Muslim girl who was accepted to The Citadel and asked for a special accomodation to wear a religious headscarf with her uniform says she will not attend the military college due to its decision.
Sana Hamze spoke on camera about the school's decision for the first time on Monday.
"If it's good enough for the military, it should be good enough for military institutions," Hamze said, referencing a 2014 Defense Department order to relax military restrictions on headgear, beards, tattoos, and piercings with religious significance for service members.
Last month, The Citadel denied her request to wear the hijab with her uniform if she entered the corps of cadets. She said she should not have to choose between practicing her faith and attending The Citadel.
Hamze will instead attend Norwich University, a private military college in Vermont, which will allow her to wear her headscarf.
