(MIAMI, FL, 9/22/2020) – The Florida chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations – Florida (CAIR-Florida), the state’s largest Muslim civil rights advocacy organization, today rejected Governor Ron DeSantis proposed ‘Combating Violence, Disorder and Looting and Law Enforcement Protection Act’.  CAIR-Florida asks the State legislature to oppose the proposed Act and not pass it into law.

On Monday September 21st, Governor DeSantis announced a proposal for a law limiting the Constitutionally guaranteed freedoms of speech and assembly.

CAIR-Florida’s affirms that a bill like this is unconstitutional and violates the civil liberties of Floridians. CAIR-Florida Civil Rights Director, Thania Clevenger stated that “Governor DeSantis’ proposal is an open effort to silence the very people our current system is killing.”

Raniah El-Gendi, CAIR-Florida’s Programs and Outreach Director said “this country was founded on the principles of freedom to dissent and protest and we cannot support any effort that will hinder those freedoms.” She added, “this proposed Act penalizes and aims to discourage people from speaking out for their rights via assembly and protest at a time when our nation is in need of more moral conviction from its leaders, not less.

CAIR-Florida’s mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR-Florida es mejorar la comprensión del Islam, proteger las libertades civiles, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
