Tampa, Fla., Feb. 23, 2021 -- The Florida Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Florida), the state's largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today joined a coalition of voting rights groups hosting a panel on ‘Voting Rights Restoration in Florida’. The panel will take place on Thursday, February 25th with a discussion on the status of Amendment 4, which restored voting rights to 1.4 million returning citizens in Florida.

CAIR-Florida Regional Coordinator Hiba Rahim stated: “Even though Amendment 4 passed in 2018 with overwhelming support, it was subsequently dragged through the courts in efforts to continue the disenfranchisement of returning citizens.” Rahim added: “The lack of clarity regarding the status of the Amendment caused people to hesitate to register to vote. This event will provide the most recent updates on the current legal status from a panel of experts, and the organizers hope that will offer comfort and clarity to our community, as well as to those who are involved in voter registration. “

Since Amendment 4’s passage in 2018 by an overwhelming majority of Florida voters, politicians in Tallahassee have sought to circumvent the will of voters by chipping away at the law's scope and creating barriers to Democracy for returning citizens. Thursday’s online event organized by CAIR-Florida, Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, For Our Future Florida, Dream Defenders,  and League of Women Voters Florida will update the community on where the law stands.
