(TAMPA, FL, 1/12/2023) — The Florida chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-FL) today announced that its immigration department has received the first grant of asylum to one of its clients.
That client is a 31-year-old man who worked as a security guard at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul and was forced to flee when the U.S. military withdrew from Afghanistan in 2021.
CAIR-Florida's Immigration Legal Department assisted the asylee with the entire application process, including his asylum interview in October 2022. Earlier this week, the applicant received the decision granting him asylum. In January 2024, the asylee will be eligible to apply for a Permanent Resident Card (Green Card) and continue to make his new life working in the United States.
CAIR-Florida lead attorney Omar Saleh said:
"This is the first of what we hope will be several grants of asylum for our clients from Afghanistan. We are optimistic that our other clients will have the same positive outcome.
"Normalizing the immigration status of asylum seekers is of utmost importance to their safety and future in America."
