CAIR – Florida Announces Its Seventh Licensed Attorney on Staff

(TAMPA, FL, 4/22/2016) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations - Florida (CAIR-Florida), the state’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization, today announced its seventh licensed attorney on staff. On April 21, 2016, CAIR-Florida’s immigration legal assistant, Maryam Saleh, was sworn-in as a licensed attorney for the State of Florida. Ms. Saleh graduated from Western Michigan University Cooley Law School-Tampa Bay campus, in the top one percent of her class and passed the February 2016 Florida Bar exam.

The Honorable Judge Catherine Peek McEwen, a U.S. Bankruptcy judge for the Middle District of Florida, acted as the swearing-in official in a private ceremony. “I first joined CAIR-Florida as a legal intern during my first summer of law school and I was privileged to serve our community for the duration of my law school career. I am honored to now be a member of the Florida bar and I am eager to continue to advance the cause of justice as a member of the profession and as a Muslim-American woman,” said Ms. Saleh upon her initiation as a licensed attorney.

CAIR-Florida’s Chief Executive Director Hassan Shibly stated, “We are continuously growing and improving the services we offer. We are meeting the challenges that a five-fold increase in hate-related incidents present to our state’s Muslim community. CAIR-Florida staff members are without doubt at the forefront of civil rights organizations in Florida.”

The Florida civil rights organization employs 20 individuals and has over 10 interns and volunteers throughout its offices in Tampa, South Florida and Orlando. Attorney Thania Diaz Clevenger added, “I am very pleased with CAIR-Florida’s seventh attorney on staff. Maryam has proven to be a very skilled professional and a wonderful person. Her licensure certainly bring new strength to our team."
