(TALLAHASSEE, FL, 3/10/2016) -The Council on American-Islamic Relations Florida (CAIR - FL), the state's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization, today decried Gov. Scott's refusal to reject GOP's presidential candidate Donald Trump's latest Islamophobic claim that "Islam hates us".

During a recent MSNBC interview on their "Morning Joe" program, Governor Scott repeatedly refused to answer and dodged multiple direct questions such as: Do you think Muslims in the State of Florida hate America? Do you think that Muslims hate Americans? Does Islam hate America? Do you personally think that Islam is a religion that hates America? Can you answer the question or should we scooped [sic]? The Governor's only relevant answer to any of those questions was: "Trump can talk about the things he wants to."

CAIR Florida blames a recent "unprecedented spike" in hate incidents in our State and nationwide, at least in part, on Donald Trump's anti-Muslim rhetoric and similar comments used by other Republican leaders such as Gov. Rick Scott. The Islamophobic public statements presently voiced by our politicians is of great concern for our community. Reflecting on the present political discourse, CAIR Florida's Chief Executive Director, Hassan Shibly, was quoted by the Tampa Tribune: "And yet the presidential campaigns today seem to be rooted in hatred and arrogance...And yet the belligerence and harshness of the candidates only seem to attract more voters today. This is reflective of a serious spiritual illness affecting our hearts as Americans, whereby many of us find ourselves attracted to so-called leaders who espouse disrespect and disregard for good character, human rights, diversity, and the rule of law."

CAIR Florida's Legislative and Government Affairs Director, Laila Abdelaziz, stated: "It is deeply concerning that Governor Rick Scott would not defend the hundreds of thousands of American Muslims living in Florida, Floridians he is elected to serve and protect.  We urge Governor Rick Scott to join President Obama and members of Congress in condemning bigotry and Islamophobia and the divisive and harmful anti-Muslim rhetoric that presumes American Muslims are not welcome in the United States. Governor Rick Scott's unwillingness to stand by American Muslims should have no place in our national dialogue."

CAIR Florida's mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties of all people, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
