(ORLANDO, FL, 9/23/2024) – The Florida chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-FL), the state’s largest civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned the Orlando Police Department (OPD) for its excessive use of force against peaceful demonstrators following a pro-Palestine rally in downtown Orlando. The rally, which took place near Lake Eola on Saturday afternoon, remained peaceful until OPD officers escalated the situation, leading to unnecessary confrontations and arrests.

The OPD’s response, the forceful shoving of a female protester, was captured on video, raising serious concerns about officers’ conduct. Rather than de-escalating tensions, officers reacted with aggression, pushing demonstrators to the ground and arresting multiple individuals.

Several peaceful protesters were arrested on charges ranging from disorderly conduct to resisting arrest, despite their lawful assembly.

In a statement, Wilfredo Ruiz, CAIR-FL Communications Director, said:

“There is no place in Florida for police excessive use of force. Law enforcement’s response to free speech cannot be police brutality; it must be the opposite. Police have an obligation to protect and safeguard the rally attendees exercising their constitutionally protected rights.

“CAIR-FL calls on the Orlando Police Department to conduct a swift and transparent investigation into the actions of its officers during this incident. Additionally, we demand that those responsible be referred to the State Attorney for criminal charges.”

Accountability is essential to prevent further violations of civil liberties and ensure the safety of peaceful demonstrators in the future.
