CAIR-FL Says President Biden’s ‘Long Overdue’ Call for an Indefinite Gaza Ceasefire is a ‘Positive Step’

Muslim civil rights and advocacy group says Biden administration must force Israeli government to immediately end genocide

(TAMPA, FL, 5/31/24) – The Florida chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-FL), today called President Biden’s “long overdue” expression of support for an immediate and indefinite ceasefire in Gaza a “positive step” that the White House must force the Israeli government to accept.

During a speech today, President Biden said it is “time for the suffering to stop” in Gaza and claimed that the Israeli government had agreed to a proposed three-stage deal that would indefinitely end the far-right Israeli government’s war in Gaza, which CAIR, human rights groups and a growing number of countries consider a genocide.

Israel has slaughtered more than 36,000 Palestinians in Gaza, mostly women and children, with more than 81,000 others injured. Israel has forcibly displaced more than two million Palestinians.

In a statement, CAIR-FL’s Policy Manager, Mari Marks said:

President Biden’s press conference today finally called for an end to the war on Gaza, 7 months and 40,000 lives too late.  His remarks come after he lied about having a red line on Rafah, and his top administrative staff lied about the continued war crimes being committed. No where in the world is a criminal asked to investigate their own crimes.  No where in his remarks did he address the expanded settlements that passed the Israeli legislature or the violence and burning of towns in the West Bank.

CAIR Florida calls on the administration to withhold any current and future arms deals with Israel, commit to rebuild Gaza, and forbid Congress from hosting Netanyahu in respect of the ICC’s investigation. Biden’s words are meaningless until the weaponization of Israel ends and they are held accountable for their crimes.

CAIR-Florida recently applauded a ruling by the UN’s International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the Hague ordering Israel to halt its attacks on Rafah in Gaza after the court declared the humanitarian situation in Rafah had “deteriorated further”.

The mission of CAIR-Florida is to protect civil rights, promote understanding of Islam, advocate for justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR-Florida es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia y empoderar a los musulmanes estadounidenses.
