A Florida man who harassed and threatened his Muslim neighbors walked away with no additional jail time in a ruling that shocked the victims’ supporters and drew a sharp rebuke from the Florida chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

CAIR-Florida called the sentence “upsettingly lenient” and criticized the judge for not ordering a monitoring device for Bouileau.

“At a time when Americans are increasingly targeted with violence and intimidation because of their faith, the Florida legislature urgently needs to consider hate-crimes enhancement legislation to protect all religious, racial and ethnic minorities,” CAIR-Florida Government Affairs coordinator Norma Henning said in a statement.
