PANAMA CITY — The Bay County Islamic Society along with the Council on American-Islamic Relations of Florida will host the 15th annual Sharing Ramadan celebration on Saturday after being canceled a year ago because of Hurricane Michael.

The event will be conducted virtually for the first time because of the COVID-19 pandemic still underway. Dinner meals will be picked up curbside BCIS mobile home office and there will be a zoom presentation afterwards.

The event was canceled last year because of the Hurricane Michael recovery, but the BCIS wanted to figure out a way to host it this year. However, the event being virtual comes with its own share of issues.

“One of the highlights of sharing Ramadan every year is the personal interactions and the opportunity for community members to meet and greet, share conversations and hugs,” said Hiba Rahim, North Florida Regional Coordinator for the Council on American-Islamic Relations of Florida. “We thought instead of canceling our event, we can adapt and host our event in the safest way.”

The personal interactions with the community is something Rahim will miss this year personally because she enjoys sharing her culture and she enjoys the human dynamic. Basheer Abdeen, BCIS youth director and assistant Imam, said he will enjoy the event even with the unique set up this year.
