Worshipers at the Islamic Center of Fort Pierce mosque where the Orlando gunman once attended will now have a new place to pray.

The new mosque will now be housed, not far away from the old building, at the site of a former Baptist church which is located in the 300 block of Oleander Avenue in Fort Pierce.

Wilfredo Ruiz, a spokesman with CAIR or Council on American Islamic Relations said members of the congregation started looking for a new building after the old mosque located on Midway Road was set on fire and destroyed by an arsonist in September.

Ruiz said there is still a great deal of work to be done on the property.

He said they have to remove pews, install carpet and rework the interior.

They asked the city for a special permit to move in early so they would be able to use the facility for services by Saturday, which is the start of Ramadan.

The facility is surrounded by two fences one concrete and the other metal.

There is also a security system in place.

No word yet on when the mosque will be complete or what will happen to the old building on Midway Road.
