(MIAMI, FL, 3/19/2018) The Florida Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Florida) has filed a discrimination action lawsuit against Florida Polytechnic University on behalf of an American Muslim faculty member who had his contract renewal denied for voicing concerns about the treatment of Muslim faculty and staff members.

CAIR-Florida's lawsuit was filed in the Polk County Circuit Court.

The American Muslim professor has raised concerns about how a female applicant who adheres to the Islamic dress code and wears a head scarf was excluded from consideration of a teaching position because of her choice of attire.  He also voiced concerns that the only visibly Muslim woman staff member at the University was terminated from her job after almost four years of service and other Muslim staff were summarily let go after a change in administration in September 2016. The complainant believes that university's policies were violated and intentionally ignored.

Last December, the American Muslim faculty member filed a charge of discrimination with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) which granted him the right to sue within 90 days. This complaint has been filed due to the conditions outlined by the faculty member voicing his concern as an Arab, Muslim employee who openly addressed racial and religious discrimination issues on campus. The University failed to give his complaints credence and renew his employment contract for the 2018-2019 academic year.

CAIR-Florida's attorney litigating this case, Tark Richard Aouadi, Esq. said: "Because of the current climate of intolerance toward minorities in the country as a whole, the university should have done more to address the concerns raised by the complainant. Discriminatory termination or refusal of contract renewal is not befitting an institution of higher learning and contrary to clear university policies."
CAIR-Florida is the state's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
