As a non-profit organization, CAIR-FL is dedicated to safeguarding the civil liberties of Muslim Americans in Florida through legal advocacy, education, media relations, civic engagement, and grassroots mobilization. Join the esteemed team at CAIR-Florida, the premier Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, as a Staff Attorney. In this critical position, you will serve as a legal advocate, defending the rights of the Muslim community and promoting justice. Working closely with our dedicated team, you will play a vital role in upholding our mission and amplifying our impact through legal expertise and advocacy.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate legal intake process, case selection, and case referral.
  • Participate in all aspects of litigation, including client interviews, factual investigation, legal research, discovery, preparation of legal documents, negotiations, trials in both state and federal courts, and appearances at administrative hearings.
  • Conduct community education and outreach, including Know-Your-Rights presentations and clinics on discrimination and law enforcement interactions at mosques, community centers, and college campuses in Florida.
  • Build and maintain relationships with clients, affected communities, elected officials, law firms, law schools, legal clinics, allied legal groups, and other stakeholders to advance CAIR-FL’s legal and policy work.
  • Assist in the production of internal and external reports.
  • Contribute to general duties such as answering phones, weekly outreach, fundraising, and other office tasks as needed.
  • Advise and counsel clients in civil rights issues affecting the Florida community.

Required Qualifications:

  • Licensed member of the Florida Bar.
  • 1-2 years of litigation experience, with a focus on employment discrimination preferred.
  • Knowledge of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (especially Title VII), First Amendment, and EEOC and other administrative procedures.
  • Passion for CAIR-FL’s Mission.
  • Excellent research skills, oral and written communication, and comfortable with public speaking.
  • High degree of initiative, willingness to collaborate, creativity, determination, and a positive attitude.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to follow through on various ongoing and newly assigned casework.
  • Familiarity/cultural competency and experience interacting with Muslim audiences in Florida.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in Arabic, Farsi, Spanish or Urdu.
  • Experience working with non-profit organizations in Florida.

Reporting Relationship & Location:
The Staff Attorney will directly report to the Managing Attorney and will be based in Florida.
