CAIR-Florida Welcomes Arrest of Florida Man
Charged for Mosque Bomb Threat
(MIAMI, FL, 5/16/18) – The Florida Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Florida), the State’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomes the the arrest of Dustin Allen Hughes, a Florida man charged federally for making a bomb threat to a South Florida mosque. Hughes has been charged with willfully calling in a bomb threat, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 844(e).
On May 5th, 2018 Hughes called the emergency contact number for the Jamaet Ul Muttaqueen Mosque of Pembroke Pines, Florida, and left a voice mail. As the U.S. Attorney’s office reports, a record of the voicemail message shows that Hughes makes the following statements: “I planted a bomb in your temple, I’m gonna blow your fucking temple up you fucking Muslim. Where you guys have your sanctuary and worship Allah, I’m gonna blow that mother fucker up. I have a detonator [that Hughes stated he was going to activate]…[Y]ou guys are all gonna be up in flames after I’m done with you!” Some days later, three additional voicemail messages were left by Hughes containing similar bomb threats.
After receiving these threats, Mosque leaders from the Islamic center immediately contacted the Pembroke Pines Police Department (PPPD) and the case was also referred to federal law enforcement
CAIR-Florida greatly commends the U.S. Attorney’s office for taking this matter seriously and for acting upon it swiftly and decisively. By achieving this arrest, we hope it serves as a deterrent for other would-be, self-proclaimed vigilantes that want to commit mass murder.
“The safety and security of our community remains a top priority for CAIR-Florida. It is shameful and alarming to continue witnessing an increment in hate crimes against Florida Muslims and their places of worship and education. CAIR-Florida applauds the swift and diligent response by the U.S. Attorney Benjamin G. Greenberg’s office that, with the support of the FBI, investigated multiple bomb threats received in this Pembroke Pine’s Islamic center. For those who still consider making threats against our communities, let it be known that you will be reported by us, arrested by law enforcement officers, and processed by our courts.” said Wilfredo Amr Ruiz, CAIR-Florida's Communications Director.
