CAIR-FL Applauds Swift Police Action in Fatal Shooting at Miami Gas Station

(MIAMI, FL – April 15, 2024) – The Florida chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-FL) today applauded the swift action taken by the Miami Police Department in apprehending the suspect involved in the tragic shooting incident at a Chevron gas station in Liberty City.

According to an arrest report released by Miami police, Shamun Shaukat, a 42-year-old employee of the gas station, was fatally shot alongside Shahbaz Hussain, and another individual, Elijah Shorter, was wounded during the altercation.

The suspect, identified as Jason Dyer-Mitchell, a 23-year-old man from Ohio, allegedly opened fire after being confronted by Shaukat on suspicion of shoplifting.

Following the shooting, Dyer-Mitchell was apprehended by Miami police approximately five hours later at a nearby apartment in the Liberty Village condominium building.

“The level of violence affecting our community is worrisome. Two Muslim brothers, Shamun Shaukat and Shahbaz Hussein, shot dead and a third individual Elijah Shorter injured is not normal and will never be acceptable under any circumstances. We ask our community to be carefully aware for their safety.”

Imam Jaber added: “We publicly commend law enforcement agencies expedited actions leading to the arrest of the criminal thug allegedly responsible for this heinous crime.”

CAIR-Florida’s prayers are with the victims and their families during this difficult time and reiterates its commitment to promoting peace, justice, and understanding in our communities.
