Pompano Beach Man Allegedly Targets California-Based Islamic Group With Hate-Filled Voicemail

Over the weekend, the San Francisco chapter of the Council for American-Islamic Relations received a disturbing message on their voicemail.

“I was hoping you guys would answer the phone today and let me know where you’re going to attack in the United States next,” the caller says. “I know that you guys are terrorists and that you support terrorists. You people are disgusting. I wish that you were not in the United States, and you don’t deserve to be here, either. I think we should ban all non-American Muslims from entering into the United States, and if it were up to me, I would ban all American Muslims as well. You people are terrorists, killers, awful female genital mutilation, antigay, antiwomen, antiwhatever.”

Oddly, the call seems to have come from South Florida. It was placed from a number with a 954 area code and showed up on the caller ID as being from Pompano Beach.

When the message was passed along to CAIR’s Florida office, communications director Wilfredo Amr Ruiz tried giving the number a call. “I wanted to reach out and let him know of the many contributions that American Muslims make in practically all spheres of our society,” he explains. “I wanted to convey to him that we are part of the American fabric, and in my case, I am a proud U.S. Navy veteran and a proud American Muslim.” But there was no answer.

New Times also tried reaching out to the caller, who identifies himself in the voicemail as Daniel Reimann. We didn’t get a response, so we can’t confirm that he actually left the message. But the number matches online records for Daniel Reimann of Briny Avenue in Pompano Beach, who is licensed as a real estate instructor and listed as an agent for the now-defunct Pompano Beach Place One Realty.

Why someone from Pompano would target a California-based group is unclear. But Ruiz isn’t exactly surprised to learn that Islamophobia is alive and well here: Between 2014 and 2015, CAIR’s Florida chapter documented a 500 percent increase in hate crimes and incidents of discrimination directed toward Muslims.

“Unfortunately, this call confirms the rise of hate incidents that the Muslim community has been experiencing,” he says.
