Muslim organizations and other advocates are planning an anti-violence vigil in Orlando Thursday night in honor of Nabra Hassanen, the Muslim teen who was kidnapped and beaten to death with a baseball bat.

The Loudoun Times-Mirror reports the 17-year-old and her friends were returning from an overnight event at the All Dulles Area Muslim Society mosque in Sterling, Virginia when they were attacked by 22-year-old Darwin Martinez Torres. Local police accuse Martinez Torres of beating Hassanen with a baseball bat and then kidnapping her. The teen's body was later found in pond. Police have classified the murder as a road rage incident, but Hassanen's family and many in her community believe she was targeted in a hate crime because she was Muslim and wearing a hijab at the time of her death. At her funeral, a neighbor described her as quiet, nice and polite, according to the Times-Mirror

The Council of American-Islamic Relations' Florida chapter, the Muslim Women Organization and other partners are inviting the community to join them for a gathering of peace and prayer tonight at Lake Eola Park starting at 6 p.m.

"This vile crime affects not only Nabra’s family and her community in the All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS), but the broader American community," says Rasha Mubarak, Central Florida regional director for CAIR-Florida, in a statement. "While we mourn the brutal murder of Nabra, we ask that you join us as we pray for Nabra, her family, and stand against violence against Muslim women and all those who continue to be oppressed."
